Inside the Studio
Never employing assistant designers, and working alone in her "secret
laboratories," everything marketed under Cashin's name was from
her hand alone. As huge licensing deals became the norm in fashion,
Cashin turned down lucrative offers for named perfumes and sunglasses.
To People magazine, one industry insider marveled at the
fact that "she could have been the richest designer in America,
but she has always been so bloody uncompromising."
In 1985, after seventy years as a professional designer, Cashin
retired from the fashion business to focus on painting and philanthropy.
She kept her New York studio intact, for her own experimentation
and amusement, until her death in January 2000. Forever fascinated
with the creative process, she spent every day expanding and improving
upon her last idea.
