Genie Shenk
Genie Shenk teaches book arts at the Athenaeum School of the Arts in La Jolla and at San Diego Mesa College and is co-founder of Mesa Arts Press, a student letter-press facility. She grew up in the South and graduated from Rice University; her interests in paper, collage, and text coalesced into a focus on book structure after she received an M.F.A. from UCLA. Her work has been widely exhibited and is in numerous collections, including the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

"My work is often about dreams. I document them daily, visually and in journals, and have begun to develop work that groups together dreams with common or recurring themes. After seeing Jane Campion's film "The Piano," I remembered that I had several entries on piano dreams in my journal .... My intent in presenting a dream is to capture its atmosphere or feeling quality and to convey the kernel of the story with a minimum of narration ..."
