There are early books on science and engineering, printed works and material in various California collections on mining and agriculture, and the papers of Alexander Klemin and Elizabeth Hiatt Gregory on aeronautical history. Among scientists' papers are those of physicist Vern O. Knudsen, and of two Nobel laureates, physicist Julian S. Schwinger and chemist Willard F. Libby. Dr. Stafford L. Warren's papers include documentation of the Manhattan Project and Operation Crossroads.

Photographer unknown. Harriet Quimby. Before 1912. Black and white photograph, copy scanned from copy negative. In: Gregory, Elizabeth Hiatt, b. 1872. Collection of material about American aviation, 1900 - 1945. Collection 313. Box 5 f.4

Mrs. Gregory collected information about "firsts" in aviation. Much of her research concerned early women aviators and the collection has rare clippings and photographs. Harriet Quimby was the first American woman pilot and Gregory has noted: "the first woman to accomplish this flight [across the English Channel]. Miss Quimby was born on May 1, 1884, Arroyo Grande, San Luis Obispo County, California. She was killed on July 1, 1912, while taking part in a meet near Boston."
