The Department began to accept collections in the motion pictures and television in the late 1950s. Tax laws were more beneficial at that time and UCLA received many choice collections very early. Family members continue to foster these collections, such as Edie Adams (Kovacs), Sandy Sturges, widow of Preston Sturges and Tom Sturges, son of Preston Sturges, Joan Benny, the daughter of Jack Benny, and members of the Albert E. Smith Family. Materials about Smith and the Vitagraph Studios were given in 1959.

There are also several collections relating to the history of the dance, not represented in this exhibit, the most important being the papers of Ruth St. Denis. Since 1950 the Dept. had had microfilm of her journals and later other materials; upon her death, it acquired the actual journal volumes and further papers.

The papers of Rudi Gernreich are the first substantial ones to be held by the Dept in the area of fashion, and the Dept. is thus one of the first to hold such papers. The papers of Peggy Hamilton Adams came about the same time and document her career as editor of the Los Angeles Times rotogravure fashion page. Other materials and scrapbooks chronicle her work as a fashion promoter ("first to hold a fashion show in the air") among other occupations.
