Notes for Paul Monette's second novel, The Gold Diggers. These
show that Monette was trying to break the prevailing stereotype of gay
protagonists as being unattractive sissies, but he was also creating a
version of the West Hollywood bar clone: "From L.A., coolly muscular body
... didn't have a stressful growing-up as a gay man - hunky." ca. 1978
